Do I need to tell my insurance and DVLA about a van wrap?
When you get vinyl wrapping applied to your van, you must inform your insurance company as well as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You are required to do this whenever you alter the original factory colour of your vehicle.
Even though you are not painting over the original colour, you are still altering the outside appearance of your vehicle with vinyl film. Your insurance company and the DVLA must be notified of this alteration for identification and legal purposes. Otherwise, they might not think it is the same vehicle if you have to report an incident involving your vehicle.
It doesn’t matter if your vinyl wrapping design contains a solid colour or elaborate graphics and signage. In cases where you have graphics and signage on your vinyl wrapping, you must let your insurance company and the DVLA know the details of the design.
Here are the two main reasons why you must notify these organizations:
Vehicle Accidents
Insurance companies want to know everything about your vehicle before an accident occurs. If you wrap the vehicle body in vinyl without telling your insurance company, and then you get into an accident, don’t expect your insurance company to pay for the cost of the vinyl.
In some cases, your insurance company may discontinue your insurance policy if they discover you altered your vehicle’s appearance without telling them. This could happen right after you get into an accident and file a claim. So, not only will you be stuck paying for the damage to your vehicle, but won’t have any more insurance coverage in the future either.
Stolen or Missing Vehicle
If you need to report your vehicle stolen or missing to the police, they will ask for your vehicle registration number. Once they enter this number into their computer system, it will give them all the physical details about your vehicle. But if you haven’t notified the police about the change to the outer appearance of your vehicle, then it’ll be more difficult for them to locate it.
